Scaling & Root Planing

You can think of scaling and root planing as a dental cleaning, except it focuses on your gums rather than your teeth. This procedure has two steps: removing plaque and tartar from along/below the gum line, and then smoothing out the roots of the teeth. The rough surfaces on the tooth roots tend to harbor bacteria, so smoothing them out will encourage your gums to heal and greatly reduce the risk of reinfection.

Antibiotic Therapy

We often supplement scaling and root planing with topical antibiotic therapy, as bacteria may have built up in deep areas of the gums that even our highly advanced instruments can’t access. In that case, we can directly apply an antibiotic called Arestin. It begins fighting bacteria right away, and over the next few weeks, it spreads throughout the gums, eliminating bacteria in even the most hard-to-reach places.

Laser Treatment

Instead of using traditional tools for gum disease therapy, we use a soft tissue laser that makes the whole process much more effective and comfortable. We carefully aim a concentrated beam of light at the diseased gum tissue to remove harmful bacteria with extreme precision. The laser even cauterizes the tissue almost immediately, so it minimizes bleeding and discomfort after your procedure, leading to a smoother and quicker recovery.
