Gingivitis: Gateway to Gum Disease

You may be shocked to be informed that your gums are unhealthy, and you are suffering from “gingivitis” the medical term for the first stage of gum disease. When plaque, tartar, and bacteria are lodged below the gum line, it can cause your gums to bleed easily, swell, and the gum line to recede. Left untreated, gum disease could lead to tooth loss or even increase your risk for overall health concerns like heart disease and type 2 diabetes.

What causes gum disease?

Gum disease is triggered by the presence of plaque, which is a sticky substance, loaded with bacteria, which adheres to the teeth and teeth roots. When left without being removed with a professional cleaning, it can harden into a substance called tartar, which is more difficult to remove. Tartar can’t be removed by regular brushing and flossing – it requires the help of professional cleaning. Plaque can lead to gingivitis, the first stage of unhealthy gums.

This stage of gum disease can be treated successfully, with early intervention. If left without treatment, it can progress to a more serious condition, called periodontitis, in which pockets develop between gums and teeth, filled with plaque and tartar, along with bacteria, with the pockets deepening with time. You may suffer the loss of both tissue and bone, and eventually tooth loss without a professionally performed treatment.

Laser treatment

Instead of using traditional tools for gum disease therapy, we use a soft tissue laser that makes the whole process much more effective and comfortable.

We carefully aim a concentrated beam of light at the diseased gum tissue to remove harmful bacteria with extreme precision. The laser even cauterizes the tissue almost immediately, so it minimizes bleeding and discomfort after your procedure, leading to a smoother and quicker recovery.

Scaling and root planing

You can think of scaling and root planing as a dental cleaning, except it focuses on your gums rather than your teeth. This procedure has two steps:

  • Removing plaque and tartar from along and below the gum line
  • Smoothing any rough areas on the roots of the teeth. The rough surfaces on the tooth roots tend to harbor bacteria, so smoothing them out will encourage your gums to heal and greatly reduce the risk of reinfection.

Antibiotic therapy: A modern approach to restoring gum health.

We often supplement scaling and root planing with topical antibiotic therapy, as bacteria may have built up in deep areas of the gums that even our highly advanced instruments can’t access. In that case, we can directly apply an antibiotic called Arestin. It begins fighting bacteria at once, and over the next few weeks, it spreads throughout the gums, eradicating bacteria in even the most hard-to-reach areas.
